The Church of God Worldwide Ministries
A Brief History
The Church of God Worldwide Ministries is dedicated to perpetuating the teaching of basic biblical doctrines as set forward by Herbert W. Armstrong and his son Garner Ted Armstrong. Those who have continued learning the Way, and those who have been introduced to it more recently, gratefully acknowledge the manner in which God used both men to further His work in the twentieth and into the twenty-first century.
Beginning in 1934 Herbert W. Armstrong established a radio ministry called The Radio Church of God. By the early 1940s the program was called The World Tomorrow. The broadcast continued on the radio without interruption and acquired a worldwide audience. At its peak The World Tomorrow was the most widely listened to religious program on the airwaves.
A single season of television broadcasting was attempted in 1955, but the time was not right for the program to reach the masses through that medium. After a hiatus from television lasting until 1967, The World Tomorrow once again was available on a rapidly growing list of television stations in the U.S., Canada, and many areas overseas even as it continued on the radio around the globe. Millions of people all over the earth listened to and watched The World Tomorrow program and responded with requests for free literature. Like the earlier radio iteration of The World Tomorrow, the television program also became the most widely known religious broadcast on earth.
In 1968 the Radio Church of God corporate name was changed to the Worldwide Church of God to reflect the global nature of its outreach. As he had done from the beginning of his ministry in the late 1920s, Herbert W. Armstrong diligently strove to promote and teach “the faith once delivered unto the saints” (Jude 3). As a result the church, broadcast, and a vast publishing effort—all geared to helping fulfill Jesus’ prophecy that the gospel would be “preached to all the world as a witness” prior to His return to earth (Matthew 24:14)— flourished and were richly blessed.
Garner Ted Armstrong, under whose day-to-day administration the church had experienced explosive growth, was ousted from the Worldwide Church of God and its corporate bodies in 1978. He subsequently founded the Church of God, International and an ancillary organization, the Garner Ted Armstrong Evangelistic Association, and continued doing the work God had called him to do. Garner Ted’s scintillating radio and television programs continued to teach God’s truth to millions even as the parent Worldwide Church of God gradually slipped into apostasy following the death of Herbert W. Armstrong in January 1986 at the age of 93.
In September 2003 Garner Ted Armstrong passed away following a brief illness. His personal ministry lasted nearly 50 years and continues posthumously through the Intercontinental Church of God, which Garner Ted founded in 1998, and through the evangelistic association that bears his name.
Over the years many offshoots of the Worldwide Church of God have emerged and to varying degrees have remained faithful to the basic principles and scriptural teachings Herbert W. Armstrong and Garner Ted Armstrong tirelessly proclaimed until their deaths. Since its inception in 2004, The Church of God Worldwide Ministries has taken its place alongside the others in carrying out the Great Commission Jesus Christ gave to His church (Matthew 24:14; Matthew 28:18-20).
Through The World Tomorrow Evangelistic Association, the church has revived The World Tomorrow telecast and, as sole owner of the trademark, has placed the program on several public access stations in various parts of the U.S. with more to come as God provides the means. God willing The World Tomorrow broadcast once again will permeate the airwaves of the world with the good news of the soon coming return of Jesus Christ and the establishment of the Kingdom of God on the earth!
On the local level a warm and growing congregation at the home church in Sevierville, Tennessee enjoys fellowship on the weekly Sabbath and annual holy days and forms a strong foundation—along with hundreds of scattered brethren who receive a weekly DVD of Sabbath services at Sevierville—for the evangelistic work God has assigned to the church and broadcast.
The seeds of the coming Kingdom of God were sown by Herbert W. Armstrong and Garner Ted Armstrong for over 70 years in person and on the air. The Church of God Worldwide Ministries sees its mission as a continuation of that work and a tangible fulfillment of the Great Commission Jesus Christ gave to the church in advance of His return to this earth in power and glory as King of Kings and Lord of Lords. The Church of God Worldwide Ministries welcomes all who wish to lock arms and join it in its vital end time mission.
